The Swiss newspaper Aargauer Zeitung reported that approximately three million smart toothbrushes were taken over by hackers to launch a DDoS attack. Daily bathroom appliances produced by a company were disabled for several hours, causing millions of euros in damage. The newspaper cited cybersecurity firm Fortinet in its report. Fortinet warned about the dangers posed by smart devices such as computer cameras, baby monitors, doorbells, and home appliances. Stefan Züger, Head of System Technologies at Fortinet Switzerland, stated, "Every device connected to the internet can be a potential target or misused for an attack." He advised smart technology users to take precautions to
protect themselves.Fortinet’s Statement: "To clarify, the issue of toothbrushes being used for DDoS attacks was presented as an example of a specific attack type during an interview and is not based on research by Fortinet or FortiGuard Labs. It appears that due to translations, the narrative around this topic has been extended to the point where hypothetical and real scenarios have become blurred."
